Located in downtown Barrie, the MacLaren Art Centre engages the local community and art lovers with continually changing exhibitions of work from regional, national and international artists. The centre houses a permanent collection of over 26,000 pieces of art work, the first piece donated was the famous Spirit Catcher, which has become symbolic of Barrie's beautiful waterfront. In addition to the collection the MacLaren recently became a must see destination for its 6ft bronze cast of Auguste Rodin's "The Great Thinker" located on the corner of Collier and Mulcaster.

Art Classes for children and adults in Barrie
The MacLaren promotes creative expression by offering art classes throughout the year for adults and children, including the summer, Christmas and March break designed for children 6-9 and 10-13 years of age. Our VanGo programme sends local artists into the schools to inspire and engage students of all ages plus now the students can come to the MacLaren for the full gallery experience. On Saturday morning there is a Family Drop in art class that caters to all ages. TGIF, a drop-in programme for ages 14 to 24 focuses the amazing creative energies of teens on a Friday afternoon. The Radio Cafe has something for every discerning palette, from the organic Fairtrade tea and coffee to start your morning followed by a gourmet lunch on the best private courytard patio in town. The Handmade at the MacLaren gift store is located within the MacLarenArtCentre and features works from local artists and is the official supplier of the miniature Spirit Catchers. Our inventory of prints, hand blown glass, silverware and handmade jewelery is regularly updated to include seasonal and holiday items, weather it's for the garden, house or a gift for a friend. We also offer suitable gifts for the more corporate clientele from custom pieces to larger volume gifts.

MacLaren Art Centre's outdoor urban exhibition
On June 14th at 6pm, the much anticipated UrbanVisions07 exhibition officially opens. Be sure to come to the MacLaren to pick up your UrbanVisions07 Passport so that you don't miss any of the 31 installations of work, that are featured throughout the downtown core of Barrie and waterfront of Kempenfelt Bay. This site specific art work was created to address the urban space of the Barrie environment and waterfront. Exhibition closes September 9th, 2007.
