And just as a family decorates its home, the women travel together to gift shows to select unique items and home accessories for the kitchen, bathroom, baby's room, and even the garden. "It's like we put a part of ourselves into the store," says Sandi.

Emma Bridgewater's distinctive pottery is made from an earthenware mix that is a variant on Josiah Wedgwood's 18th century recipe for creamware. All along the shaping process, there are people checking each piece for any faults, so only the very best quality finished pieces make it onto shop shelves. Emma set up Emma Bridgewater Ltd in 1985 to make the pottery that she could not buy. To date, she has continued to design fresh new patterns every year. Now Emma and her husband, designer Matthew Rice, live with their four children, dogs, cats, sheep and assorted poultry in a Victorian rectory in Norfolk where they do all the designing for the company.
